Getting Around Jamaica

Jamaica may feel like a small secluded island at times but there is a lot of real estate to explore!  If you have the common misconception that many others do, thinking you can walk or rent a bike to go everywhere, you are certainly mistaken.  While the hospitality of the people may give you a tiny town feel, there is a lot to explore here!  Fortunately, Jamaica makes it easy to get around, regardless of your budget.

Domestic Flights

Unless you want to drive four hours to Negril from the Kingston airport, you’re going to need a quick flight, courtesy of Air Jamaica Express.  Not only can Jamaica’s helicopters and domestic airlines get you to your destination in a fraction of the time so you’re not chiseling away at a chunk of your vacation, they’ll bless you with some dynamic and unparalleled views of the island.

You can fly from one city to another, anywhere on this island in less than 45 minutes.  Montego Bay and Kingston house international airports while Negril, Ocho Rios and Portland have smaller airports.  Air Jamaica and Jamaica Air Shuttle are your contacts.

JUTA

JUTA features a large assortment of air conditioned cars, coaches and buses, drove by experienced drivers who know their way around the island.  The Jamaica Tourist Board certifies the drivers so you can feel safe in their hands and they are happy to provide you with island information and recommend local venues where you can experience the most authentic food in Jamaica.  JUTA vehicles adhere to very strict standards and drivers must be in a contract with a tourism enterprise or reputable resort.

Public Transportation

Getting from here to there doesn’t have to break your budget.  Public transportation may not offer the smoothest ride but it certainly will get you to where you want to go.  Many say it’s a form of adventure in itself!

Cities like Kingston have air-conditioned coaches but when traveling out of the city, route taxis and minibuses are the primary transportation source.  Every town in Jamaica has a bus park and conductors make it very clear where they are going.  Always verify fares with the driver before you board.

You will also find route taxis around Jamaica, be sure the one you choose has a red PP license plate.  Taxis are in abundance on the island so don’t be afraid to pass one up if it doesn’t feel right.

Rental Cars

If you can read a map and aren’t scared to drive in a foreign land, there are many rental car facilities scattered around the island.  You must be 25 and carry a valid drivers license on you at all times.  Speed limit on the highways is 80 kph and 50 kph in the city.

Now, here’s the fun part, Jamaica drives on the left so if you’re visiting from an area where you drive on the right, this could take a little getting used to.  Be on the lookout for pedestrians, bicyclists, motor-bikes, giant potholes and a large amount of animals who will share the road with you.  Jamaicans are kind enough to blow their horn when they’re racing around a blind spot as a warning so don’t let it rattle you!  They also use their horn to communicate thank you and hello so you’ll find on this island, your horn is your friend!
