Beyond the intoxicating view of the Caribbean Sea, lapping the sands of this lush tropical island, you will find people who smile a whole lot! Not only do Jamaicans live in one of the most beautiful places on the planet, they lead a lifestyle that seems to move at a different pace from the rest of the world. Jamaicans take the time to participate in things they enjoy and for many, various sports are at the top of that list! Some people play sports, others are spectators but one thing is for sure, Jamaicans put their passion into these games!
- Soccer – Whether you call it soccer or football makes no difference, as long as you make time to take in a game while you’re there! The first football club was formed in 1893 and friendly international games soon became a way of life. Despite their failure of trying to participate in the World Cup year after year, fans grew stronger and every child on the island was soon seen kicking a ball around. By 2007, The Reggae Boyz made history and were the first English-speaking country in the Caribbean to qualify to be a part of the World Cup finals.
- Cricket – As a memento of the colonial days, cricket lives on despite the void of British rule. This was a game once reserved for the elite but today, it is a sport for the people. Jamaica has produced some of the world’s best players but you don’t have to even be familiar with cricket to enjoy the energy that will envelop you at a match. If you are in the area, head on over to Sabina Park which is the main grounds or you might catch a match at Alpart Sports Club Ground, Chedwin Park or Kensington Park.
- Netball – This is the most popular female sport in Jamaica and their prideful team consistently ranks as one of the top five in the world. Jamaica loves their Sunshine Girls, made up of four squads and once bitten by the bug, you will too. If you are unfamiliar with netball, it’s a lot like basketball but there is no backboard and the ball and hoop are smaller.
- Track and Field – Jamaicans can run no doubt about that! In the past six decades, they have produced a consistent flow of world records and brought home Olympic gold medals. Athletics are practiced at a young age here so even catching a local high school meet is quite a treat. You might just see the next top Olympic athlete!
- Rugby – While rugby is fairly new to the area, Jamaica’s rugby league is growing in high schools and universities. Nothing beats the excitement of a rugby match out under the sun.
- Basketball – The popularity for basketball is growing in Jamaica. Although this is a sport that has been played there for many decades, it wasn’t until the 1980s when the world noticed Jamaica after defeating Belize in their first international game. Later in 1996, the Male Senior Squad was awarded the Caribbean Championship title and a year later, the Under 18 Team won the 1997 Junior Championship. This young team didn’t stop there though, they went on to win the championship in 1999 and placed third in 2001. One of these high energy games are certainly worth catching on your trip to the island.
- Golf – This may not be the most popular sport played in Jamaica by the locals, but it is a top pick by visitors. The spectacular terrain, beautiful environments and cooperating weather create the perfect setting for a round of golf. Jamaica has hosted its share of major championships so even the most veteran players are sure to find a challenging course worthy of their time. Although Tryall Club Jamaica may be voted as the most prestigious, there’s something about the mountain and seaside greens at Cinnamon Hill Ocean Course that will keep you coming back for more.
Jamaica is an island not only full of adventure but a never-ending supply of energy. Jamaicans love sports and due to their friendly and inviting nature, they’re always happy to have another player or spectator!
